Hamadan is one of the oldest cities, not only within Persia, once known as the cradle of Oriental civilization it is one of the oldest cities in the world. The tribal hand-woven rugs here are treasured pieces and are known to be durable, lasting generations of heavy wear. Almost all the Hamadan rugs are woven on a cotton foundation using hardy wool from the sheep used to a cooler mountainous climate for the pile. Typically the rugs have a geometrical design often with a single central medallion. The rugs are of good quality are generally long lasting. Colors are predominantly made up of strong reds and blues with ivory used as a contrast. The rugs are woven with soft, tightly knotted wool using Turkish knots. There are various smaller villages such as Engela and Malayer which fall under the Hamadan region, each with slight differences in design and quality.
